Song analysis: Umbrella

I chose “Umbrella” by Rhianna to analyze. This song uses slant rhyme, sibilance, internal rhyme, and assonance. These sound patterns contribute to the overall flow of the song and make it sound good. This song uses slant rhyme in the lyrics “Because when the sun shines, we'll shine together, Told you I'll be here forever” because together and forever kind of rhyme but don’t quite. But, you still get the flow of the song from this. This song uses sibilance in lyrics like “Because when the sun shines, we'll shine together”. The repetition of the "s" sound makes the whole song flow very well.

In Umbrella, internal rhyme is used often.  It is used in lyrics like “You're part of my entity, here for infinity” Entity and Infinity rhyme and they are used to create the flow of the song that doesn’t always come from end rhymes. In this song, there is a mixture of end and internal rhyme. This song also uses consonance in lyrics like “You know me, in anticipation for precipitation” The repetition of these consonants add to the overall mood of the song.
