PH response

The most notable thing that I noticed when I was reading this section of purple hibiscus, was Kambili and Jaja's rapid character change during their time in Nsukka. I say rapid considering the minimal character development before they went on the trip, but it wasn't that rapid. When they got there, they still wanted to follow whatever Papa said, even though he wasnt there, for example with the schedules. But as the time went on, Kambili slowly got less and less socially awkward, and grew to become more mature and independant.

When she returns home she is more independant and can see more clearly, without being shielded by papa's controlling nature. Jaja is more bold in his independance, he directly talks back to Papa when he said "maybe he didn't want to convert" and when he asks for his key. Needless to say all of this spirals into the moment when Papa walks in on them looking at the picture of Papa Nnuwuku, and he kicks Kambili until she is unconcious. I find this character change facinating because of how, well, brainwashed Kambili was with Papa. The fact that Papa allowed them to go back to Nsuukka is so surprising to me.
